I haven't seen the movie, 2012, so I don't know if it says anything about the idea of 2012 being a window of opportunity for a more enlightened global community or an upward shift in human consciousness, or anything like that - or if it just focuses on the global cataclysm aspect. Have you seen the movie?

I know the Mayan's believed each Age ended with one sort of natural disaster or another. So if they were right, and if there is a pattern to the progression of the Ages and how they end, then it would follow that this age would end in some similar manner. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the Mayan prophecy for the end of the present Age is that it would end by fire.

In any case, there is the popular notion that this catastrophic ending will be followed by a new beginning and that Mankind will find itself in the process of becoming more enlightened through a gradual shift in consciousness. I'm not really sure this "enlightenment/consciousness shift" idea was ever actually part of any Mayan prophecy but it is a great idea.

The scenario I created for the story in my novel is that an event is going to occur prior to 2012 which – if left unchecked and allowed to happen – would completely annihilate all life on the planet, thus preventing Mankind from ever reaching that unprecedented window of opportunity in 2012.
